Janey A. Place, Ph.D.

Janey A. Place is a Senior Consultant with The Santa Fe Group and CEO of DigitalThinking, a business strategy, technology, innovation and payment systems consulting company based in New York City and Los Angeles. The Santa Fe Group has a strategic partnership with DigitalThinking.

A noted financial services innovator, Janey was selected by Bank Technology News Magazine in 2007 as Number 5 in its listing of the top 20 financial services innovators of the last 20 years. Her career has included holding a number of executive management positions with major financial institutions with responsibility for payments strategy, technology strategy and management, innovation management, strategic investing and product strategy and development.

Janey reported to the CEOs of Bank of America and Mellon Financial and was a member of the senior management committee at both companies. At Bank of America, Janey was the executive vice president for the company’s Strategic Technology group, which was responsible for Internet initiatives, advanced technology research and development, and information technology architecture. At Mellon Financial, she was president of Mellon Lab and OnLine Services and executive vice president with Mellon Financial Corporation, responsible for the company’s business innovation lab, e-commerce strategy, customer information management, enterprise websites and design services. She also served as director of Mellon Ventures.

Janey has served on the boards of On Line Resources (OCRR), an ecommerce/bill pay company, and PortBlue, a privately held technology company. She is a co-author of the National Academies Panel book, Privacy in the Information Age and is a former president of the Financial Services Technology Consortium.

Earlier in her career, Janey was a senior vice president in charge of Internet strategy and research and development at Wells Fargo Bank. She also was information technology manager at Hughes Aircraft Company and corporate manager of strategic technology planning for Tosco Corporation.

Janey has shared her knowledge with students of systems and communication theory as a member of the faculty of the University of California, Santa Cruz. She earned her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and Ph.D. in systems theory from the University of California at Los Angeles, and attended the UCLA Graduate School of Management. She is a published author of two books and numerous articles, and is a frequent speaker at financial services industry events.
